TNC History

Tuesday Night Café Theatre:

A History and Handlist of ‘TNC’

By: Cece Culver-Grey

History

McGill University’s Tuesday Night Café Theatre, commonly referred to as TNC, was founded by Peter Grossman and Veronica Brady while they were undergraduate students between 1976 and 1980. Brady was the initial Artistic Director, while Grossman was the first Technical Director. Brady would thus be responsible for selecting what shows to do and Grossman would then organize their staging. TNC’s founding was largely made possible by the help and support of Harry Anderson and Patrick Neilson, two professors in the Department of English at the time. Anderson was responsible for the initial concept as he noted that the unused space of Morrice hall’s room 106 could effectively be used as a theatre space to complement the grandeur of Moyse Hall. When he was able to confirm that he could supply the basic resources for the new theatre project, including blackout curtains, lighting poles and a small lighting board among other things, Brady and Grossman jumped on the opportunity. While Anderson was responsible for initially obtaining the space and the preliminary resources, Neilson contributed to the physical construction of the new theatre by setting up the grid, lighting, platforms and curtains using the initial funds of $1500. Later support was also received from Michael Bristol, both financially and spiritually, when he became the head of the program. In addition to the support provided from within the Department of English, Grossman recounts the vast support and encouragement the pair received from the student community itself. There was a core dozen or so students who helped endlessly with the productions themselves, including the publicity, front of house organization, stage crew and so on.

At the time of TNC’s founding, the only other student theatre organization was Players’ Theatre Club, not associated with the Department of English. Neilson describes the Players’ of the time as being a kind of ‘‘closed shop that was run by grad students or fourth-year undergrads” (Neilson). Grossman further describes the club to have been “private, insular and intimidating to outsiders” when he arrived at McGill in 1976 which is why he believed McGill’s theatre community was in need of something like TNC (Grossman).

TNC officially launched in November of 1977 when it began holding theatrical events on Tuesday nights as Tuesday was one of the only nights of the week that was lacking in theatrical activities at the time. Neilson built tables and stools for the theatre and audiences would come and have coffee while they were being entertained by short plays, music and comedy. Although most details have been lost, Grossman recalls having such guests as Spaulding Gray, The Blackbird Theatre from Baltimore and Maxim Mazumdar perform in these cafe-type settings. As TNC developed, it began producing complete plays with multi-night runs. Amidst these early productions TNC was also host to a comedy group which included Cathy Disher, who went on to an acting career on CBC, and Ed Saxon, the Oscar winning producer of Silence of the Lambs.

During these first four years, TNC operated largely informally until it officially received its charter from the English Department in 1980. TNC’s lasting success is largely due to the devotion and hard work of its early members. With each of these early productions, TNC gained a growing loyalty from its audience until it ultimately reached its goal of establishing itself as McGill’s third theatrical space. As described by Eliza Townsend, who was heavily involved with TNC between 1978 and 1982, TNC offered a ‘really important opportunity for student-led productions, particularly in contrast to Mainstage productions, while having a tremendous sense of community. It was a stimulating place’ (Townsend).

Location

In the years of Grossman and Brady, room 106 in Morrice Hall was solely used for TNC productions. However, When Aga Khan made a significant donation towards the renovation of the Islamic Studies building in the early 1980s, TNC was fortunate enough to benefit as well. Through this they received upgraded dressing rooms, rehearsal space and theatre. During the 1981-1982 and 1982-1983 seasons, while these renovations were taking place, TNC productions were held in the neighbouring Players’ Theatre.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s Moyse Hall and its Annex were being renovated causing several mainstage productions, as well as the costume facilities, to be relocated to Morrice hall. Despite this exception, throughout most of the 1980s and 1990s TNC was the sole occupiers of almost the entire first floor of the building. Throughout these years under their name TNC had two dressing rooms, a rehearsal room, an office, the theatre, its backstage area and a tech closet. However, by the early 2000s, TNC gradually started losing its space to the Islamic Studies Department, resulting in its current situation in which it is permitted use of the theatre, a classroom on the third floor, the two dressing rooms and an office, which was formerly the tech closet.

Administration

Prior to 2010, TNC’s only funds were allotted to them by the Department of English. They were required to report to Moyse Hall regarding their budget and administrative needs. However, due to an anonymous $50 000 donation in 2010, TNC is now able to use the working capital of this invested sum as its yearly budget causing them to be much less dependent on the Department of English.

In the mid-1990s, a formal constitution was created by TNC which explicitly described the roles and responsibilities of its executive. Since then, the formation of its executive team has remained mostly unaltered, generally including an Executive Director, Technical Director, Publicity Director, Financial Director, Events Director and Front of House and Office Director.

Since its founding, TNC has had two different telephone numbers and two different emails. The first telephone number was (514) 392-4637 which they used until the 1988-1989 season when they switched to (514) 398-6600. In the 2010-2011 season TNC decided to cancel their phone altogether. In 1998-1999 they began using tnc_theatre@hotmail.com as an easier means of communication but switched to tnctheatre@gmail.com in the 2006-2007 season.

Handlist

As can be noted through observing the attached handlist, TNC is a small space which has allowed for a unique, often low-key type of theatre to be produced. Several reoccurring playwrights throughout its history include Harold Pinter, George F. Walker and Edward Albee, whose theatrical styles call for an intimate space such as TNC. The Theatre’s charm is perhaps best described by Shawn Selby, the Technical and Executive Director between 1995 and 1997, who states “it [is] small enough to be accessible to anyone, but big enough to showcase some real talent” (Selby).
